North Carolina property managers are required to be licensed as real estate brokers. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Resident (on-site) managers and employees of real estate brokers working on behalf of the landlord do not have to be licensed brokers so long as they do not negotiate leases, rents or deposit amounts.

To obtain a broker's license, applicants must take the required pre-license course and pass the examination. Brokers with licenses valid in other states will still have to re-qualify for their license in North Carolina, as of February 2012.
