The United States does not have a national general sales tax. However, federal sales tax is applied to some sales transactions, and most states also levy taxes on the sale or lease of most goods and some services. Tax rates and exemptions vary from state to state. Bulk sales are generally exempt, as is the purchase of groceries, prescriptions, and agricultural supplies.
Canadians pay a 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on most goods and services, except for exempted items such as groceries, rent, medical services, and financial services. Except for the Province of Alberta and the 3 territories (Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories), all provinces in Canada also levy a sales tax. Some provinces have adopted a Harmonized Sales Tax / GST which has pushed the sales tax rate up to 15% in Nova Scotia.
