The Fair Trading (Code of Practice for Retail Tenancies) Regulations 1998 governs the leasing of commercial business premises in the State of Tasmania. The Code applies to all retail premises with a floor space of 1,000 square metres or less, and to all small retail spaces in shopping centres.
The Code of Practice is intended to protect the interests of both commercial landlords and their business tenants. It applies to all kinds of retail shops and restaurants, including shops that sell beer, wine and spirits, but it does not apply to bars or taverns where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises.
