• Born Lucille LeSueur in San Antonio, Texas, Joan Crawford started her career as a dancer but was signed by MGM to a motion picture contract in 1925, thanks to her tireless self publicity.
• She won an academy award for Mildred Pierce in 1945.
• In 1955 she married Alfred Steele, the president of Pepsi-Cola Company, and was involved with the Board of Directors until 1973.
• She retired from films in 1970, having made over 80 films and a number of TV appearances.
• After her mother's death from a heart attack, her daughter Christina wrote a bitter memoir entitled Mommy Dearest about her relationship with her mother, in which she alleges a pattern of abuse throughout her childhood.
