- Pope John XXIII was Pope for only a few years - from 1958 until his death in 1963.
- He was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in the Lombardy region of Italy.
- He served in the Royal Italian Army in World War I as a stretcher bearer and chaplain.
- As nuncio during World War II he made many efforts to save Jewish refugees from the Holocaust.
- He was known affectionately as 'Good Pope John' and was considered the most beloved Pope in history.
- In 2000 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
