To qualify for buyer assistance in Louisiana, there are certain criteria that must be met by both the buyer and the subject property. For first-time homebuyer programs, the borrower must:
- not have owned a home in the past three years OR be a single parent or a displaced homemaker who has only owned a home with a former spouse while married,
- have a minimum credit score,
- meet a specific debt-to-income ratio,
- complete a homebuyer education course, and
- meet specified income limits.
The property must be a single-family home, condo or townhome located in one of the participating parishes, and must be the primary residence of the borrower. The property cannot be located in a flood zone and the purchase price must not exceed a certain limit.
