    • He was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in the Lombardy region of Italy.
    • He served in the Royal Italian Army in World War I as a stretcher bearer and chaplain.
    • As nuncio during World War II he made many efforts to save Jewish refugees from the Holocaust.
    • He was known affectionately as 'Good Pope John' and was considered the most beloved Pope in history.
    • In 2000 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
