Cobain was the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Nirvana, who went from being a grunge band with a cult following to mainstream success on the strength of their album Nevermind and the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". This opened the door for alternative rock to become a dominant force in American music.
