• John Calvin (Jean Cauvin) was a French theologian, pastor and writer during the Protestant Reformation, and a principal figure in the development of the Christian theology system which was later called Calvinism.
• Calvin broke away from the Roman Catholic Church around 1530 but was forced to flee to Switzerland when religious tensions in Franch provoked violent uprisings against the Protestants.
• As church leader, introduced new forms of church government and liturgy in Geneva, despite the opposition of several powerful families who tried to suppress his authority. Calvin spent his final years promoting the Reformation both in Geneva and throughout Europe.
• Calvin was influenced by the Augustinian tradition, and expounded the doctrine of predestination and the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation.
• Calvin's writing and preachings provided the seeds for the branch of theology that bears his name. The Presbyterian and other Reformed churches, which look to Calvin as a chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world.

• John Lennon was an English rock musician, singer-songwriter, author, and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles. With Paul McCartney, Lennon formed one of the most influential and successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century and wrote some of the most popular music in rock and roll history. He is ranked the second most successful songwriter in UK singles chart history, after McCartney.
• After The Beatles split, Lennon enjoyed a successful solo career, and was often in the media spotlight for his activities as a peace activist. Following a self-imposed retirement to raise his son Sean, Lennon reemerged with a comeback album, Double Fantasy, but was murdered less than one month after its release. The album would go on to win the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
• In 2002, respondents to a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted Lennon Number 8. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Lennon number 38 on its list of the 50 greatest artists of all time (but he actually took two spots, because the Beatles were number one).
• John Lennon was posthumously inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

• Katharine Hepburn was an American actress of film, television and stage. She holds the record for the most Best Actress Oscar wins with four, from 12 nominations. Hepburn won an Emmy Award in 1976 for her lead role in Love Among the Ruins, and was nominated for four other Emmys, two Tony Awards and eight Golden Globes.
• Hepburn was an accomplished athlete as well, due to her father's influence. She was the epitome of the modern young woman during the early years of the 20th century - outspoken, unconventional, intellectual. She preferred pants to dresses and usually went without makeup.
• Hepburn first worked with Spencer Tracy in 1942 on Woman of the Year. They began a lifelong clandestine romance, complicated by Tracy's unwillingness to divorce his estranged wife because he was Catholic. Their relationship lasted until his death in 1967. He died in Hepburn's house, in which he spent much of his time.
• In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Katharine Hepburn as the greatest female star in the history of American cinema.

• Cobain was the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Nirvana, who went from being a grunge band with a cult following to mainstream success on the strength of their album Nevermind and the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit". • Cobain was uncomfortable with the level of success and the media focus on him and his personal life. These factors no doubt played a huge part in his struggles with drug addiction.
• On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his home in Seattle, after committing suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.
