Q. How much are landlords allowed to charge for a security deposit under Vermont law?
A. Vermont law restricts landlords from charging more than one month's rent for a security deposit, unless the lease is a long-term lease of more than 1 year. In this case, the landlord can ask for up to 2 months' rent as a security deposit. But they cannot charge extra deposits such as pet deposits, cleaning deposits, and the like.
Q. When does the landlord have to return the security deposit?
A. The landlord must return the security deposit within 14 days after the end of the tenancy, BUT the tenant must have provided the landlord with a forwarding address in writing, or else the 14-day timeline does not apply.
